Much has been said about organic food and its benefits. Some people adhere to this trend looking to eat more naturally, others opt for organic food for environmental reasons, and the truth is that there are more worthwhile reasons to make the change.
Benefits of Organic Food
Fewer Pesticides
Contrary to popular belief, organic food needs pesticides during the harvest process. The difference is that these pesticides are based on natural ingredients, resulting in vegetables and fruits with fewer chemical residues.
More Nutrients
Even though regular spinach is almost as nutritious as an organic one, there is new evidence that links farming methods to the augmented nutritional content of foods. The influence is associated with healthier soils, cleaner water, and manual processes.
In fact, a 10-year study made by the University of California proved that tomatoes that grew organically could have up to 50% more flavonoids.
Get rid of GMOs
GMOs or genetically modified organisms are not allowed in organic food. That means farmers can only harvest natural seeds -generated by other vegetables or fruits- and feed cattle with clean grass, alfalfa, or corn.
Stepping away from GMOs results in less chemical compounds that can potentially affect our organs in the long run. And even though GMOs are generally safe, it’s always better to opt for organic options.
Healthier meats
If you enjoy animal protein, choose organic meat. It will not only be better for the environment, but it also keeps more of its heart-healthy omega-3 fats.
Organic poultry and pork are free of pesticides and fertilizer, and most importantly, antibiotics, which is a common practice on conventional farms.
Help the environment
As we said many times before, organic food it’s a way to help our communities to reduce their impact. Farming organically requires less water and diminishes carbon dioxide levels. Also, these processes are more respectful of the soil and natural resources.
